Achieving A2

With a Pre-BER (Building Energy Rating) of D1, and a post-BER rating of A2, this energy upgrade project included in the 2023 One Stop Shop Scheme is now a modern, energy-efficient, comfortable and healthy home.

This D1-Rated home had a primary energy rating of 250.02kWh/m2/yr, and 53.02 kg/CO2/m2/yr carbon dioxide emissions indicator.

The post works final results came in at 25.61 kWh/m2/yr for primary energy use and 3.28 kg/CO2/m2/yr for the carbon dioxide emissions indicator, resulting in an overall energy rating of A2.

Upgrading Ireland’s Housing Stock

Located in Co. Dublin this 1960's home was included in the 2023 One Stop Shop Scheme, part-funded by SEAI, to undergo whole home energy-efficiency upgrade works. The grant provided by SEAI helped fund the energy efficiency upgrades including wall, floor and attic insulation, heat pump, underfloor heating, solar PV system, and new double glazed windows. KORE Retrofit Ltd. provided project management services, design solutions, technical expertise, quality control services and full grant administration.

Breaking down the details

Wall Insulation

100mm of KORE external wall insulation was installed on the existing building using the Stomix external wall insulation system. 90mm internal wall insulation was installed on the front walls of the home. Best practice and high-quality workmanship ensured that repeating and non-repeating thermal bridges were eliminated or kept to a minimum.

Attic Insulation

200mm of mineral wool was installed in the attic, between the joists and over the joists, completing the top up of insulation to 300mm. The trap door was insulated with 100mm of PIR board, with pipe lagging and a new cold water tank jacket also installed.

Floor Insulation

130mm of floor insulation was installed, with 50mm screed with underfloor heating. Completing a whole insulation approach for wall, roof and floor applications, eliminating thermal bridging, and ensuring heat loss is kept to a minimum.

Heating System

KORE installed a 11.2kW Mitsubishi Electric Eco Dan air-to-water heat pump, providing heating via a renewable source, eliminating the use of fossil fuels, while decreasing carbon emissions. Underfloor heating was installed downstairs, with new radiators and heating controls upstairs.

Windows and Doors

The home had sufficient energy efficient double glazed windows and doors already installed, with an addition of one double glazed uPvc low energy roof window installed in the kitchen roof.

Solar PV System

A 3.6kW Jinko Solar PV System was installed on the roof with a 3kW Huawei inverter. This renewable energy technology provides free, green energy to the home, complementing the renewable heat pump system, and enabling the home to reach an A2 building energy rating. The house now runs on electricity only, and energy generated from the solar panels.
